Building a Deck on My Tiny Off-Grid Cabin in the Woods

Living in a tiny off-grid cabin nestled in the woods offers unparalleled peace and simplicity. However, one thing I longed for was an outdoor space where I could fully immerse myself in the natural surroundings. Building a deck was the perfect solution, providing both functionality and an extended living area.

The first step was deciding on the size and layout. My cabin is small, so the deck needed to complement its scale without overpowering the space. I settled on a 10-by-12-foot design that would wrap around one side of the cabin, offering a cozy spot for lounging, dining, and stargazing.

Next, I gathered materials. Living off-grid means every trip to town is deliberate, so I made a detailed list of pressure-treated lumber, galvanized screws, and concrete deck blocks. For sustainability, I sourced reclaimed wood for the railings and accents, adding a rustic charm that blends seamlessly with the forest backdrop.

Building the deck was both challenging and rewarding. Without electricity, all the work had to be done with hand tools and a lot of patience. Leveling the ground and setting the foundation were the most critical tasks. I used gravel under the deck blocks to prevent shifting and ensure stability.

Once the framework was secure, attaching the decking boards was straightforward. As I hammered each plank into place, I couldn’t help but marvel at how the deck began to transform the cabin’s exterior. The final touch was staining the wood in a warm cedar tone, protecting it from the elements while enhancing its natural beauty.

Now, the deck is my favorite spot. From enjoying morning coffee to unwinding under the stars, it has become an extension of my tiny home and a gateway to the serenity of the woods.
