Beginner’s Guide to Getting On and Off Your Horse

Riding a horse is an exciting and rewarding experience, but before you start, it’s essential to know how to mount and dismount properly. Doing this correctly ensures your safety and your horse’s comfort. Follow these steps to get started with confidence.

Mounting Your Horse

  1. Check Your Tack – Before getting on, ensure your saddle and girth are secure, and your stirrups are adjusted to the proper length.
  2. Position Your Horse – Stand on the left side (the traditional mounting side) and make sure your horse is calm and standing still.
  3. Hold the Reins – Lightly hold the reins in your left hand to maintain gentle control.
  4. Use a Mounting Block (if available) – This helps reduce strain on your horse’s back and makes mounting easier.
  5. Place Your Foot in the Stirrup – Insert your left foot into the stirrup while keeping your right hand on the saddle for support.
  6. Swing Over Smoothly – Push off with your right foot, swing your leg over the horse’s back, and gently settle into the saddle.
  7. Adjust Yourself – Once seated, adjust your stirrups and ensure a balanced position.

Dismounting Your Horse

  1. Prepare to Dismount – Stop your horse and ensure it is standing still.
  2. Remove Your Feet from Stirrups – Take both feet out of the stirrups to avoid getting caught.
  3. Swing Your Right Leg Over – Lean forward slightly and swing your right leg over the horse’s back.
  4. Lower Yourself Gently – Slowly slide down and land on both feet to avoid jarring yourself or the horse.

With practice, mounting and dismounting will become second nature. Stay patient and always prioritize safety!
